Opportunities for SEIU 1021 Members
The Education Fund is working with SEIU 1021 on grant-funded programs and services for SEIU members training for healthcare, public health and community health jobs in California. These programs are for SEIU 1021 members only. To qualify, sign up today at seiu1021.org.
This grant will serve 1,000 members in education programs until June 30, 2025. Programs are grant funded by the State of California through the HRTP Resilient Workforce General Fund (RWF) Program. Funding is targeted to address workforce shortages and build labor-management partnership in workforce training for union employment.
Programs and Services
Until June 30, 2025, this program is supporting 1,000 members in Education Fund training programs for high need healthcare, public health and community health roles. The goal of the grant is to build labor-management partnership to solve workforce needs and to advance grant participants’ careers through training and job placement.
Programs include:
- American Heart Association certification courses (see below)
- Career pathways including:
– Phlebotomy in East Bay with rolling applications. Day, evening, and weekend classes are available. - CBS Certificate Lactation Education Program – open to RNs, LVNs or individuals working directly with nursing mothers, this program provides over 52 hours of lactation-specific education and culminates in a Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS) Certificate.
- Career Advice – 1:1 with one of our Career Counselors

American Heart Association certification courses
The Education Fund partners with Lifework Education and Project Heartbeat to offer American Heart Association certification courses to all eligible SEIU 1021 members. Lifework and Project Heartbeats’ in-person and hybrid (virtual training & in-person skills assessment) course offerings make it easy to fit classes into your busy schedule.
Available classes include:
- Basic Life Support/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (BLS/CPR)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification

Project Heartbeat Locations:

How to apply for Lifework or Project Heartbeat Education courses:
- Log in or register for MyEdFund, our secure member portal.
- Navigate to Available Programs, then Continuing Education.
- Select AHA Certification.
- Then, select Lifework Education or Project Heartbeat on the next page (Depending on location).
- Click on the link to Lifework’s Ed Fund landing page or Project Heartbeats landing page and complete your registration. Use the promo code provided on the landing page to sign up for courses at no cost.
Tuition Support
Tuition Support from the Education Fund provides financial assistance to employees of select Union partners who want to advance in their healthcare or social service careers through educational training programs.
We reimburse up to a maximum of $5,250 per person for eligible healthcare and social services education fees such as:
- Tuition, required textbooks and required student fees (for degree or certificate programs)
- License and certification exam fees or license renewal fees (must be completed)
- Continuing Education Units (CEUs) (must be completed)
Tuition Support is provided through reimbursement. Participants must pay all costs up-front and then request financial reimbursement for eligible expenses. Receipts must be dated between September 1, 2022 – June 1, 2025 and must be submitted with your application.
Acceptance is not guaranteed. Grant funding for this program is limited and applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Full-time SEIU 1021 member
- Must be social service or healthcare education
- Have receipts showing payments made toward education at the time of application
- Enrolled in a degree/certificate program with a completion or graduation date between September 1, 2022 – July 1, 2025
or completed CEU or license renewal between September 1, 2022 – June 1, 2025

If you meet the above eligibility criteria to apply for this program, you must make an account via MyEdFund, our secure, online member portal.
Please select your employer and input your employee ID.
Your employer will be listed under the text that says:
“*If you are a member of SEIU 521 or SEIU 1021 working in Kern, San Francisco, Monterey, or Santa Clara Counties, select your employer from the list below:”
Once you log into the portal, you will see the “Available Programs” option on the menu bar. Find the program for which you’re applying, click the “apply” button and complete the application.

Huda is an Education Fund Regional Coordinator serving members of SEIU 521 and SEIU 1021 in Santa Clara, San Francisco and Kern Counties. She will focus on serving non-Education Fund eligible workers through grant funding in the immediate term while our teams plan for the longer-term sustainability of services with new partners through expanded employer contributions. Huda comes to the Ed Fund with a background in case management and direct patient care in healthcare. Her previous experience includes serving as a Housing Coordinator at Housing Choices, where she managed a caseload of more than 70 families with developmental disabilities, exceeding their caseload quota by 133%. Additionally, she has worked as a sales manager focusing on direct client marketing and advertising, digital sales, and contract negotiations. Huda earned their Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from California State University, Monterey Bay and is a fluent Arabic speaker.
